.: APRIL - MAY 2005

GETTING YOUR TWO (OR THREE) SCENTS WORTH

Skin care giant Clarins enters the crowded fragrance market this month with the love-inspired PAR AMOUR (50 ml, $74). The subtle perfume blends notes of pink peppercorn and blackcurrant with Ottoman rose and sandalwood. (A second fragrance, PAR AMOUR TOUJOURS (30 ml, $38), is an eau de toilette designed for girls.) Available exclusively at The Bay until April 21 in department stores and drugstores thereafter. Slightly more risque is the new KENNETH COLE REACTION FOR HER (50 ml, $60). This "juicy floral" blends pink grapefruit and watermelon with violet leaf and yellow poppies to create a scent perfect for the sexy young thang on the go. Available in May at Bay department stores across Canada, followed soon after by fine fragrance counters. Joining the HUMMER fragrance on Canadian shelves is the automotively motivated JAGUAR WOMAN (40 ml, $60) and JAGUAR CLASSIC (40 ml, $55). Her fragrance combines floral (think water lily, jasmine and peony) and fruity (lemon, blackcurrant and water melon) notes with a base that includes sandalwood. His is an aromatic blend of lotus flowers and orange blossoms enhanced by ginger. And both come in stylish bottles by Parisian designer Thierry de Baschmakoff. Available at select Shoppers Drug Marts.

STYLE GUISES

Men are spending more and more time grooming (for 44.2 per cent of them, up to 51 minutes a day, according, to one survey), but they're still in a hurry. The DIPPITY-DO SPORT line ($3.99 each) of gels, sprays and waxes offers gents easy-to-use styling aid that's quick and easy. The Vitamin B5-infused Sport Gel (also available unscented) and Spray Gel make edgy hair styles a snap, while Extreme Gel and Defining Wax offer the ultimate is follicular control. Available at select drug stores and mass retailers across Canada.

STYLE GUISES 2

Ladies looking to keep their heads healthy will benefit from Clairol HERBAL ESSENCES' new premium styling line ($3.99 each), which includes STYLE REFRESHING MIST, HUMIDITY DEFYING GEL, FRIZZ DEFYING SPRAY GEL, SMOOTHING CREME WITH ALOE and TEXTURIZING POMADE. Look for R&B singer Ashanti in the TV spots. Available at food, drug and mass retailers across Canada.

THE LONG OF IT

Short, punky hair-dos may be in vogue, but long hair will always be welcome. It's just so hard to care for! It gets dry, greasy, and don't even talk about split ends. Which is why the 3-step GARNIER FRUCTIS LONG & STRONG line ($3.99 each) is so welcome. Step 1: shampoo that strengthens hair from the inside. Step 2: conditioner that leaves hair shiny and tangle-free. Step 3: Force Anti-Split Ends Serum powered by fruit micro-oils. Available at mass retailers, drug stores and selected supermarkets across Canada.

ON HAND & FOOT

Want to know how old that Botoxed crow in marketing really is? (Thirty-eight, my foot!) Look at her hands. Everyone's age is reflected in the thinness of the skin and the prominence of the veins. Except perhaps for proponents of LUSH's new SMITTEN HAND CREAM ($14.95). Natural oils (including almond, wheatgerm and avocado) combine with butters (cocoa and coconut) to keep your mitts supple and soft. Personally, though, I need help with the feet. They get cracked and chaffed way too easily. Which is where Lush's oddly-named VOLCANO FOOT MASK ($16.95) comes in. Organic potato and papaya, as well as kaolin, work to dissolve dirt and deep cleanse your tootsies. Fresh organic tomatoes deodorize, pumice pummels, and glycerine moisturizes. Both are available at LUSH stores across Canada.

FLAKE ACHE

It's spoken of in shamed, hushed tones, but dandruff is all too common for both sexes. Guys out to moisturize their dehydrated scalps will cheer the arrival of bc MEN DANDRUFF CONTROL SHAMPOO (250 ml, $14.50). Its Octopirox and Panthenol provitamin B5-enhanced formula loosens dandruff when massaged into the scalp. Available at salons across Canada. Ladies interested in preventing future snowfall are directed to NEUTROGENA T/GEL DAILY CONTROL 2 IN 1 DANDRUFF SHAMPOO PLUS CONDITIONER (250 ml, $10.99). The enhanced Zinc Pyritione formula acts fast to relieve scalp itching, flaking and irritation, and three conditioning agents provide effective dandruff control, leaving hair soft and manageable. Available across Canada where health and beauty products are sold (excluding department stores).

SWEAT & WILD

It's a delicate subject but, hey, let's face it: you smell. Or if you don't, you will soon. Enter BAN ANTIPERSPIRANT ($2.99, invisible solid; $3.99, roll-on) and their four new fragrances: Floral Fusion, Sweet Surrender, Satin Breeze and Shower Fresh. Each employs kihada, a patented botanical ingredient, to fight the odour caused by stress as well as heat. Available at select grocery, drug and mass-market stores across Canada.
